Backpacker Map places (OpenStreetMap)

10,816 places in 61 country files, read from OpenStreetMap through the Overpass API. Each file is a list of rows [latitude, longitude, name, kind]; for each country the best places of each kind are kept, as the script below describes. These files hold OpenStreetMap’s data as it was when it was read: details can be out of date.

Border crossings (OpenStreetMap)

1,055 border crossings on the full-screen passport map, from OpenStreetMap’s border posts (barrier=border_control), read through the Overpass API. The file lists each as a row [latitude, longitude, the zoom it shows from, the lands it is between, who may cross, its name, its hours, named crossings near it]; where the border runs comes from Natural Earth, as the script below describes. They are where OpenStreetMap’s mappers have marked a crossing, as it was when it was read: crossings close, move and change their hours, and none of it is official.

Country data (world-countries)

What the app reads of each country — names in English, Turkish and Spanish, capital, currencies, languages, calling codes, region, center and neighbors — cut from the world-countries dataset by Mohammed Le Doze and contributors, as two TypeScript modules: the whole record, and the short form the first screen reads.

How the files were made

These plain-text scripts make the files on this page from OpenStreetMap and from world-countries. Beside the OpenStreetMap script are the two modules it reads to choose and score places, and the two scripts that read and build the border crossings.
